SR-22 Insurance

What is an SR-22 Insurance?

Sometimes referred to as an SR22 bond or form, this is a certificate of financial responsibility. You can purchase one through an insurance agency. The SR22 certifies that you own the state required insurance. Many times, this is purchased because it is required by court.

How do I know if I need SR-22 Insurance?

Usually the only time you would need an SR-22 would be when you are required to get one by a judge. Some of the common reasons you might need an SR-22 are:

  • DWI/DUI (Driving While Impaired/Driving Under the Influence)
  • Driving without insurance
  • Reckless driving
  • Multiple moving violations
If you are deemed a high-risk driver, that doesn’t mean you can not get insurance. It just means you may be required to get additional documentation such as this one before you can drive again. You would be notified by the Secretary of State if you were subject to the SR-22 requirement.

How Does SR-22 Coverage Work?

An SR-22 is enforced to make sure high-risk drivers are consistently insured. Once you are notified that you need an SR22 you can contact your insurance company to provide one. You are only required to meet the minimum insurance requirements within your state. Keep this in mind when choosing your insurance.

At times, having an SR-22 on file can increase your future insurance rates since you will be considered a high risk driver. Although, if you continue to keep your insurance active and drive safely; this will soon be overcome. Access Insurance specializes in high risk drivers and customizes their plans so our rates are still affordable.

Is SR-22 Auto Insurance?

No, an SR-22 is not actual insurance. It is a certificate that needs to be purchased as proof of insurance. You will also need to have car insurance with an SR-22.

How do I get an SR-22?

An SR-22 can be obtained by an Insurance Agency that is authorized to file to form. Access Insurance has certified agent that can walk you through the process. Once your insurance is purchased, Access will file the SR22 form to obtain your certificate. You can NOT file for an SR-22 yourself; an authorized agent must do this. If you choose not to purchase an SR-22 your licensed will be revoked by the Secretary of State, and you will continue as a high risk driver.

How long will the SR-22 be on file?

Your SR-22 policy can range and may be different depending on your state. In Indiana and Arizona it is from one to five years, depending on the violation. The average amount of time is 2-3 years. You should not cancel your policy until the required time has been met or your license may be suspended by the state.

Once you are no longer required to maintain your SR-22 you can call your insurance provider and have it removed from your policy.

Does my SR-22 Expire?

You policy will not expire if you continue to pay the premium and keep your policy active. If you cancel your policy before your required time is up, the state will be notified, and your driving privileges may be revoked.
